How to Prepare Your Child for the Big School Transition (Without the Anxiety)

The move from kindergarten to primary school is one of the biggest transitions in a young child’s life — and for many parents, it can feel just as nerve-wracking as it does for the children. With the right preparation, it doesn’t have to be.

Start with Stories

Books about starting school are a wonderful way to introduce the concept without pressure. Stories normalise anxiety, raise questions naturally, and let children process new ideas through characters they feel safe with.

Practice Independence at Home

Can your child manage their own coat and shoes? Use the bathroom independently? Open their own lunchbox? These practical skills reduce anxiety enormously on the first day. Practise them as fun “being a big kid” games — not as tests.

What We Do at Tiny Oaks to Support This Transition

Our Oaks Pre-School programme includes a dedicated school-readiness module in the final term, working with local schools to align vocabulary, routines, and expectations. We also offer parent transition workshops and one-to-one meetings to discuss any individual concerns.
